Products of this type, made of natural kiln dried/heat treated timber, might now and then have an occasional crack or split, because the timber itself is "alive", and changes in temperature and humidity do have impact on it.
As you might have noticed, the way the boards are connected to the hinges, each board is held firmly by 4 rivets on each side (8 rivets per board), and that ensures that even if a board were completely split all the way, the collar would still be usable.
In cases of small cracks or splits, the easiest remedy is to inject some wood glue into the split and clean off the excess. Thus repaired collar will still be perfect to be used as raised garden bed.
If your product is not usable and you want to exchange it, email us the picture of the defect and we will get back to you asap.
Note, if you bought the Kiwi Collar from someone else but Orighinami LLC, please contact that vendor directly. If you did not get any reasonable respond from our retailers within 1 week, email us the details of the vendor and short description of your case.
Kiwi Collars are made of natural wood and are not treated in any way with chemicals. However, they are heat treated, kiln dried and debarked; ISMP 15 compliant to extend the timber's life. The timber comes from managed forests and not from any wild resource.
General
No, the Kiwi Collars are not treated to be termite-resistant.
Nevertheless, here is what a customer from a highly infested area in Australia said:
The positioning of the collars is very important (away from breading areas of these insects). If you do not place them in dark and damp area, the collars should be fine.
You can easily find an eco-friendly coating to protect the wood from termites in your local DIY store.
